The droid R2-D2 made his cinematic debut in Star Wars IV: A New Hope in 1977. Alongside his fellow golden protocol droid C3PO, R2-D2 had to transport the Death Star plans to the Rebel Alliance forces before the Empire gets their hands on it.
In addition to the first three films, R2-D2 has featured prominently in the prequels and assisted a younger Obi-Wan (Ewan McGregor) and the Jedi Master’s young Padawan, Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christensen), during the Clone Wars and witnessed the collapse of the Republic due to Order-66. He has also appeared in the sequel trilogy, providing assistance to Rey, Finn, Princess Leia, and other new heroes.
